As winter weather brings freezing temperatures to the area, there are some easy ways to prevent damage to water pipes in your home or business:
- Disconnect any garden hoses and cover any outside faucets.
- Heat the structure any time the outside temperature is below freezing. Open interior doors and heat all rooms where any plumbing is located.
- Insulate pipes in unheated sections of the structure and in crawlspaces.
- Let indoor faucets drip or periodically run water for short periods in different parts of the structure.
- Locate your structure’s water shutoff valve, and keep its location in mind. This valve can usually be found where the water service line enters the structure. Being able to shut off the water quickly can limit the severity of any damage if your pipes do rupture.
- Notify the utility department of any leaks you find along a service line or water main so our crews can prevent water loss.
